Volunteer at Daily Bread

The best way to get involved at Daily Bread is to volunteer. We value and appreciate your energy, skills, and experience in supporting our programmes. You bring new ideas and are role models for our children and staff. You may not realise how much impact you have as a volunteer, but staff and children are encouraged by your interest and energy. New resources mean we are often able to get to programmes that have been put on the back burner and that lead to growth.

We have had a wide variety of volunteers at Daily Bread over the years. Some come for an afternoon, others commit to 1 afternoon a week. Church and corporate teams visit and spend an afternoon with the children, playing soccer and netball and having a braai together.

Volunteer Opportunities

Apart from child care and necessary admin, there is a myriad of opportunities for volunteers. We run a small farm and need input and encouragement to harvest and utilise vegetables effectively. We are situated on a farm and all water must be pumped from the Buffalo River. Pipelines, tanks, and pumps need maintenance.

Skills Programme

We run a skills programme for children in the afternoons and new skills and support for existing programmes are essential. Baking, sewing, hairdressing opportunities are always available. We need better marketing and fundraising and these can be performed anywhere in the world.

Ways to volunteer

Short-term (Once off visit or event)

  • Coach a sports team during the holidays
  • Come for the afternoon or a Saturday morning to interact with the children, play games or offer practical help like fixing windows or painting a building or wall
  • Raise funds for Daily Bread e.g. cycle from Johannesburg to Cape Town with sponsorship per km, or climb Table Mountain and put a Daily Bread flag on the summit!
  • Take a group of children to the movies or the beach
  • Spend an hour with a group of children baking brownies

Long-term (Typically 6 months or more where volunteers take on a role or run a programme under staff supervision)

  • Run a skills programme for children on two afternoons a week. Typical skills include hairdressing, gardening, reading, English conversation, maintenance, marketing and many more
  • Implement a recycling programme and train staff and children
  • Run sports programmes in the afternoons (soccer and netball)
  • Run sewing classes
  • Provide part-time support for admin, social media, photography, fundraising, or marketing.
  • Host a child in your home for a weekend each month, or over a holiday period.

The list of needs is endless and we welcome your energy, skills, and experience.
